I recently had to have carpel tunnel surgery on my hand. I came to learn that pricing transparency in healthcare is a myth.

After spending over 10 hours on the phone calling the surgeon, surgery center, anesthesiologist, insurance company I only received partial information.

I tried to find out what the “list price” was for procedure and my portion of the payment. This was extremely difficult. The process and the lack of pricing transparency totally frustrating. Complete lack of transparency puts the patient and their finances at an extreme disadvantage. There is unknown risk for all aspects of care–filling a prescription to complex surgery.

Have you every had this type of experience with pricing transparency in healthcare? Mark W. Schwartz, Ph.D.
